Types of flu vaccination services offered
  • Seasonal (cell-based) flu vaccination
  • Seasonal (egg-based) flu vaccination
  • New Zealand wide Flu Vouchers

Seasonal (cell-based) flu vaccination – contains the flu vaccine strains expected to be in circulation in the coming southern hemisphere winter as – recommended annually by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Cell-based flu vaccination is designed to be an exact match to the WHO chosen flu strains.

’Cell-based’ flu vaccines refer to how the flu vaccine is made.

Cell-based flu vaccines are completely egg free as cell-based flu vaccine manufacturing eliminates the need for using fertilised (or embryonated) chicken eggs in the flu vaccine manufacturing process.

Cell-based flu vaccines have been successfully used annually overseas since 2016 – with more than 292 million doses distributed worldwide.

Possible benefits of using cell-based flu vaccines include:

1)  Studies showing greater protection against flu or flu like illness amongst people who have received cell-based flu vaccines vs those people who received egg-based flu vaccines.

2)  Eggs, antibiotics and preservatives are not used in the production process of cell-based flu vaccines as these are not needed.

3)  A significantly reduced environmental impact as renewable cell-based flu vaccines do not require the production and disposal of large amounts of chicken eggs – and associated manufacturing waste – that are used in the manufacturing of seasonal egg-based flu vaccines.

4)  Cell-based vaccine technology has successfully been used to produce other licensed vaccines including for rotavirus, polio, smallpox, hepatitis, rubella and chickenpox.

Onsite Health is one of the first providers in New Zealand to offer seasonal (cell-based) flu vaccinations.

Seasonal (egg-based) flu vaccination – contains the flu vaccine strains expected to be in circulation in the coming southern hemisphere winter – as recommended annually by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The traditional method of producing flu vaccine – that has been successfully used for more than 70 years – involves using fertilised (or embryonated) chicken eggs to grow flu viruses in.

Onsite Health was one of the first providers in New Zealand to offer seasonal (egg-based) flu vaccinations annually in client workplaces since 2000.

New Zealand wide Flu Vouchers – Onsite Health offers a New Zealand wide, flu voucher service.

Flu vouchers can be ordered directly through us, and then redeemed at selected GP surgeries and over 260 vaccinating Life and Unichem Pharmacies throughout New Zealand. There is no minimum number of flu vouchers required to make a purchase of flu vouchers – making flu vouchers a cost effective option to protect your staff and business against influenza for those working from home or in regional offices throughout New Zealand.

How influenza affects your organisation

The flu is highly contagious and will result in significant staff absenteeism. Being fit and healthy will not protect you or your staff from getting the flu.

Every year the flu affects up to 20% of New Zealanders. Flu is a productivity killer. On average, people with the flu will miss 3 to 5 workdays. If staff are unwell and come to work with the flu, their productivity drops by 50%. People who work with people who have the flu also experience a drop in productivity.

Some estimates suggest that sickness costs NZ businesses around 3% of their total salary and wage bill. In the USA, flu’s impact is calculated at between 0.24 to 0.80% of GDP.

Flu vaccination is the recommended and most effective way of reducing staff absenteeism resulting from the flu – in addition to being cost effective. A single flu vaccination is the most effective way of preventing influenza in healthy working adults against the flu vaccine strains expected to be in circulation by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the coming winter.

Part of the purpose of organising workplace flu vaccinations is to support the health, safety and wellbeing of your workforce. Facilitating workplace flu vaccinations assists in reducing the risk of flu transmission within your workplace and the wider community.

A healthy workforce is a productive workforce.
